He isn’t aware as it happens— that’s the worst thing. He’s only ever unconscious when it awakens and lays everything to waste. He can’t know how he transforms into a shimmering mass of darkness. He can’t see his face as it turns gray and flat and lifeless, can’t see his eyes or mouth as they become gaping holes of cold, white light.

He can’t sense his aura as it turns in on itself, the warm, suffuse rainbow concentrating into a hot white surrounding his dark form. He doesn’t feel it whipping through his hair, doesn’t feel it as it weaves about his head, a viney web of white like a thorny crown. He cannot feel it as his aura seeps the light and color from his surroundings, leaving the world a churning mass of blacks and grays.

He cannot know what he becomes when the Shadow Prince emerges from within, no longer tethered by his conscious mind at the forefront of his self. All he knows is the aftermath, and only then once the Prince has chosen to retreat.
